Myanmar’s Best Beaches

Part of what makes Myanmar such an alluring destination is its diverse mix of things to do and places to see. The historic architectural sites, natural wonders and traditional culture are enough to keep travelers busy for weeks or even months! After all this exploring, a few days spent relaxing at the beach are the perfect way to wrap up a Myanmar holiday.

Myanmar is blessed with nearly 2000 kilometers of coastline so there are lots of options to choose from! Whether you are looking for a Myanmar luxury beach stay, a family-friendly getaway or a remote eco-resort, Odyssey has something to fit every taste!

In this week’s blog, we share Odyssey’s selection of best beaches and hotels for your Myanmar beach break.

NGAPALI BEACH: Ngapali is a long-standing favorite for international travelers. Situated on the northwest coast, Ngapalis is best reached by plane with daily flights from Yangon and Heho (Inle Lake).  The beach boasts white sands, swaying palm trees and tranquil turquoise waters- what’s not to love!  Boat trips and snorkeling are available as well as land-based activities like trekking, cycling and even hot air ballooning. There are also plenty of hotels to chose from in Ngapali, ranging from simple guesthouses to luxurious properties on private beaches. Despite its popularity, Ngapali is relatively undeveloped compared to beaches in neighboring Thailand. It still retains a sleepy vibe and has no nightlife or entertainment options, just a few humble seafood restaurants and souvenir stalls.

Odyssey’s top picks for favorite Ngapali Beach Hotels: Ngapali Bay Villas, Yoma Cherry Lodge and Art of Sand Residence

NGWE SAUNG & CHAUNG THAR: These two beaches are located east of Yangon, around 5-6 hours drive from the city. While the sand is not as white and waters not as blue as found in Ngapali, these two beaches are still well worth a visit thanks to their wide beaches and warm seas.  There is also delicious seafood to be had and a range of activities, such as horse-back riding and boat trips. Due to the proximity to Yangon, Ngwe Saung and Chaung Thar are busy on the weekends but it rarely feels over-crowded. The long beaches are dotted with hotels and guesthouses, although there are no true luxury properties.

GWA: This sleepy fishing village on the west coast is a hidden gem! Located around 3 hours south of Ngapali Beach or 7 hours drive from Yangon, it takes a bit of effort to reach but if you truly want to ‘get away from it all’, the journey is worth it!  There is no development- yet- so aside from spending time in the sea and on the shore there is not much to do.  Bring some good books, switch off your phone and enjoy the beautiful nature and quiet vibes of Gwa!

Odyssey’s top picks for best Gwa hotel: Arakan Nature Lodge (set on a private bay a short drive from Gwa) and Thalassa Guesthouse

MYEIK ARCHIPELAGO:  Located at the southern reaches of Myanmar, the Myeik Archipelago boasts more than 800 islands. Most of these islands are uninhabited and, until recently, the only way to explore the Archipelago was by liveaboard boat. Now a handful of luxury eco-resorts have opened, and more tourists are adding a visit to Myiek as part of their Myanmar holiday. Whether you chose to cruise or stay at a resort, the islands are sure to impress you with their untouched, natural beauty.
